Spring is elusive

A couple of weeks ago, we spent the afternoon in shorts and short-sleeved shirts digging in the dirt. The day before, a Friday, it got up to the high 70s and it was only a tad cooler the next day. With flowers blooming and trees turning green with new growth we quickly switched to spring mode.

We headed to Home Depot and a local nursery and bought a lot of plants, flowers, soil, and mulch. We spent hours on our knees digging holes, planting, watering. The weather was perfect—warm enough for shorts but no sweating. As we were finishing up the plant bed, the sun dipped below the houses and trees and we were quickly aware that it was still March. After cleaning up and showering we headed back outside—in pants and light jackets—on our way to the pub for pints and pot roast.

Spring was here! Rejoice!

The next weekend we woke up to a light dusting of snow.

Sure, it melted before 9 a.m., but to go from 70s to snow was harsh. We had already embraced spring, but it turned out to be elusive. The month of March continued to give us light rain and colder temps with freezing nights. We worried about our newly planted roses and crepe myrtle and other plants.

April arrived and with it slightly warmer temperatures, which had us back out in the garden today completing more of our 70+ feet long path. It was much chillier today than that other weekend, but once again it felt like spring.

I look at the forecast for the rest of the week and the 84 degree day that is supposed to be tomorrow seems out of place and unlikely. But with the exception of one 50 degree high, this next week should be in the 60s, and that has me thinking (hoping) spring is finally here.
